Wisdom Teeth: Information for Parents and Teens

At the Center for Oral Facial & Implant Surgery, we perform the safe removal of wisdom teeth frequently, and are happy to answer any of your family’s questions about this procedure. Although wisdom teeth removal is a routine procedure for us, we know that many teens are apprehensive about the procedure. Our highly-experienced doctors employ advanced safety measures and state-of-the-art tools to give your family a great wisdom tooth experience.

Why We Extract Wisdom Teeth

Also known as “third molars,” wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt in the mouth, which usually leads to crowding or “impaction” (the inability to erupt through the gums). Wisdom teeth often grow in crooked with the potential to damage nearby teeth and nerves, cause infection and create additional complications down the road, including cysts and tumors.

When is the best time to have wisdom teeth removed?

Between the ages of 17 and 25 we have a unique window of opportunity to remove wisdom teeth with little risk of complication because the roots have not yet fully developed.

Choosing an Oral Surgeon for your Child

Oral surgeons are the first choice for the removal of wisdom teeth because we attend several years of hospital-based training beyond dental school and are specially trained in anesthesia as well.

Complications from Wisdom Teeth Removal

There is very little risk with wisdom teeth extraction, however, as with any surgical procedure, some risk does exist. Rare but possible conditions include infection, dry mouth, damage to the roots and nearby teeth.

Wisdom Teeth FAQs

What is an “impacted tooth?”

A tooth that is unable to fully erupt through the gums is “impacted.” This is a very common problem: 9 out of 10 people have at least one impacted wisdom tooth. It is also the number one reason for the removal of wisdom teeth.

How long does the procedure take?

The procedure takes just about an hour and is done in our AAAHC-accredited facility for hospital-level care in a comfortable environment.

Does wisdom teeth surgery hurt?

You will be pain-free and sleepy throughout the surgery, and for a short time after. As the anesthesia wears off later in the day, you will probably start to feel some soreness that lasts a few days. Follow your pain management plan carefully to minimize discomfort and call us with any questions or concerns. Chattanooga Office Phone Number (423) 893-3333.
